Homework
We have always held the belief that, if children are actively
and purposefully occupied during the school day to the extent
of their ability, formal homework should not be necessary.
However, Government legislation has meant that the school
has had to formalise its Homework Policy.
In the Reception Class we encourage the children to practise
reading activities and phonics, and parents are advised how
to follow up activities at home.
Children in Years 1 and 2 will be expected to spend approximately
1 hour per week doing formal homework (reading, spelling,
other literacy and number work).
Children in Year 3 and 4 are expected to complete 1.5 hours
of formal homework per week (as above).
However, parents who wish to be actively involved in their
child's development may assist by helping children to research
a topic and generally showing a desire to share the child's
school experience.
We ask that parents take the responsibility of helping the
school implement this policy by providing a suitable quiet
area in which children can do their homework, supporting their
children in the completion of the work, making it clear to
children that they value homework, encouraging and praising
pupils when they have completed their homework and joining
in with the homework of younger children (this does not mean
that parents do the homework for the child!).
