Health Education (including reference to Sex Education)
The basic aim of our Health Education plan in this school, regardless
of age and ability of pupils, is to ensure that children growing
up know that, accident and misfortune apart, health is a matter
of personal choice.
4 - 7 years (Key Stage 1)
Health Education has to be closely related to the development
of the whole child and the provision of a secure environment in
which the child can develop confidence, grow and learn. Through
a variety of activities suggested by the 'Health for Life' programme,
the children gain self esteem and respect for others, which leads
them to understand some of the factors which affect their health.
7 - 9 year (Beginning of Key Stage 2)
Through these years of education we aim to provide children with
a progression of more detailed knowledge and understanding of the
workings of their bodies and the way in which they can take responsibility
for their own health and well being.
Sex Education (specifically Human reproduction) is not a 'taught'
area within this framework. However, children are introduced to
the continuing life cycle of plants, insect, animals and ourselves.
Questions related to 'ourselves' will always be truthfully answered
appropriate to the age and perceived needs of the child involved.
Due consideration will be given to the wishes of the family and
discussions will be instituted with parents if the need arises.
The staff and governors of this school feel that any reference
to Sex Education should be within the context of a whole Health
Education programme and the study of all living things. |
